The five-day countrywide recruitment drive for cadets (Assistant Warden I) and rangers in the ratio of 150 to 1,350, respectively that commenced on Monday 15th April 2024, in search of 1,500 young and dynamic conservationists is on course.

Day 1 of the eagerly anticipated exercise kicked off in Lamu, Marsabit, Isiolo, Embu, Kitui, Machakos, Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu, Nandi, Migori and Kisii counties.

The second day’s recruitment took place in Tana River, Meru, Makueni, Kirinyaga, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia, Homa Bay and Nyamira counties.

Day three was conducted in Kilifi, Wajir, Tharaka Nithi, Murang’a, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kajiado, Bomet, Bungoma and Kisumu.

The remaining two days will see recruitments in 17 different counties, and the exercise is expected to wind up on Friday 19th April, 2024.

The nationwide recruitment - which saw youthful applicants turn up in their numbers - is a response to the plethora of evolving wildlife protection challenges currently being experienced in Kenya. KWS sought individuals who are capable of enduring taxing training conditions, by dint of the fact that the Service operates in remote terrains whilst carrying out its conservation mandate. The recruitment advertisement run in the My Gov pull out dated March 19th specifically stated that candidates applying for the positions turn up in appropriate running gear.

All successful candidates will undergo a mandatory, paramilitary training at the Law Enforcement Agency in Manyani, after which they will be deployed across the eight conservation areas (Tsavo, Eastern, Mountain, Southern, Coast, Central Rift, Northern and Western) under KWS’ jurisdiction.

The Kenya Wildlife Service Field Training School – Manyani was established in July 1990 and in 2011, the name was changed to KWS Law Enforcement Academy, because the institution also trains personnel who undertake security oriented duties but hail from non-conservation fields, such as the Kenya Ports Authority. The academy is located within Tsavo West National Park, off the Nairobi - Mombasa Road, 290 km South of Nairobi and 196 km North of Mombasa.
