Dr. Erustus Kanga is the Acting Director General of Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Dr. Kanga has over 20 years’ experience in biodiversity conservation, climate change vulnerability assessment and mapping, bio-enterprises, and community livelihood support. He has a long trajectory in biodiversity conservation, including (five) 5 years of service as the Secretary for Wildlife at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife & Heritage, and 16 years of extensive work experience with the Kenya Wildlife Service, where he was responsible for Biodiversity Research and Monitoring across the Protected Areas.
In 2017, he was awarded the Head of State Commendation (HSC) in recognition for his outstanding and distinguished services in the field of biodiversity conservation.
Dr. Kanga attained his PhD in Natural Resources Conservation from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands in the year 2011. He has authored over 30 publications, and is driven by the passion to work towards the core purpose of biodiversity conservation.
Mr. Elema W. Saru, HSC, ‘ndc’ (K)
Prof. Charles Musyoki is a trained conservation scientist and manager. His training includes a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in wildlife management (Moi), a Master of Philosophy degree in wildlife management (Moi) and a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Kyoto, Japan).
He was employed as a Research Scientist Intern by Kenya Wildlife Service in 1993 and rose through the ranks over the years to become Principal of the Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute, the Director General of KWS, Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Utalii College. He currently is the Director of Wildlife and Community Service. Over 30 years of service with KWS exposed him to a diverse range of work experience.
His work and experience cuts across leadership, administration, management, coordination of programs, research, ecological monitoring, single species strategic planning, management plan formulation and the social / human dimension of conservation. He also has experience in project management, proposal writing and fund raising.
The Head of State in 2011 awarded him an Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) commendation for his accomplishments and contribution to national efforts to conserve and manage wildlife.
He is a member of the IUCN Antelope Specialist Group and the African Lion Working Group. He has authored and co-authored a number of publications of wildlife research and conservation. He is an author of a book entitled ‘Human-Wildlife Conflict in Kenya- crop raiding by elephants and other wildlife in Mahiga –B village, Nyeri County’. He is a Research Professor of Kyoto University since May 2018.
He was seconded to KWS as the Director Wildlife Security from National Police Service where he rose through the ranks and was serving as Staff Officer Operations at KPS headquarters. He holds Master of Arts in Leadership and Security Management (KU) and Bachelor of Arts in Security Management and Policing Studies (KU). He has attended various managerial and leadership courses both locally and abroad including Large Scale Infrastructure Project Security management course at PPSU (China), Training Building course at CoESPU (Italy), Conflict Analysis and Prevention course at HPSS, Regional Senior Mission Leaders Course at IPSTC, and Strategic Leadership and Command course by College of Policing (UK).
His experience in security sector span over 3 decades and he initially served in GSU, later as an instructor at National Police College, Kiganjo, County Police Commander in various counties and on secondment as Head of Operations at National Counter Terrorism Centre for 7 years.
