Rhino Conservation Efforts Boosted

Kenya Wildlife Service’s rhino conservation efforts received a considerable boost with the donation of a plethora of equipment, reading material and clothing items at a grand event held at KWS headquarters on Friday 17th May 2024.

Receiving the donations, KWS Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga expressed gratitude at the long-standing collaborative conservation model KWS and her partners, which enables the Service attain her broad mandate.

There are 17 rhino conservancies in Kenya, and the rangers’ kits handed out as per individual rhino sites included over 500 pairs of boots, solar panels, inverters, solar charge controllers, rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries.

Other kits previously donated on August 31st, 2023 included sleeping bags, bed rolls/mats, rain coats, ponchos, camelbacks, mess tins, tactical torches, rechargeable batteries, binoculars, heavy woollen jerseys, and an assortment of field wear. Other important donations to enhance rangers’ knowledge on the intricacies of rhino conversation were 30 copies of the Kenya Rhino Monitoring Guidelines and Protocols, Version 3.0, and 30 copies of the Kenya Rhino Monitoring Guidelines and Protocols Instructors’ Manual, edition 6.

The funding for the donations was facilitated by the US Department of State Bureau of international Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, under the project name ‘Giving Rangers Technology Tools and Training to Counter Wildlife Trafficking in Kenya.’
