
Watamu Marine National Park, established in 1968 as one of the first marine protected areas on Earth, is scripting an extraordinary recovery story. Between April and June 2026, a determined coalition of conservation partners launched a coral restoration campaign that is already showing powerful signs of renewal in this 10-square-kilometre sanctuary managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The initiative marks a decisive turning of the tide for a reef system that has endured four decades of climate-related stress, and it stands as a beacon of hope within the broader Malindi-Watamu-Arabuko-Sokoke Biosphere Reserve.
The challenge facing Watamu’s coral reefs was severe and well-documented. Successive bleaching events – most notably in 1998, 2016, 2020 and 2024 – hammered the reef’s living fabric, sending hard coral cover plunging from 38 percent at the close of the last century to just 19 percent. While pockets of thermally resistant coral colonies managed to survive, natural recruitment of new corals has remained alarmingly low. Without active intervention, the trajectory pointed toward further degradation, jeopardising not only marine biodiversity but also the fisheries and tourism upon which coastal communities depend.
Faced with this reality, the partners embraced coral gardening as the core restoration strategy. The alliance brought together KWS, A Rocha Kenya, the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and a dedicated contingent of local community members from Watamu. Over three intensive months, marine teams focused on two carefully selected types of coral fragments. First, they collected “corals of opportunity” – naturally broken pieces that, left unattached, would die in the shifting sands. Second, they propagated fragments from thermally resistant colonies, those survivor corals that have already demonstrated an ability to withstand heat stress. Both approaches purposefully enhance genetic diversity, boosting the reef’s ability to cope with future ocean warming.
Transplantation was only part of the equation. Teams simultaneously carried out meticulous algae weeding to clear competing turf and macroalgae from degraded reef patches, creating the space and light conditions young corals need to establish themselves. The involvement of KMFRI, IUCN and A Rocha Kenya ensured that every step was grounded in rigorous science and aligned with global biodiversity targets. Meanwhile, community members from Watamu contributed irreplaceable local knowledge, labour and long-term stewardship, cementing a sense of shared ownership over the recovering reef.
Warden Willys Osore, manager of the Watamu Marine Protected Area, captured the spirit of the campaign with quiet conviction. “Coral restoration is not just about planting fragments,” he said. “It is about building resilience.” By focusing on heat-tolerant corals and genetic variety, the initiative seeks not merely to replace lost coral cover, but to tilt the odds in favour of the entire ecosystem as climate pressures intensify.
The early results are profoundly encouraging. Transplanted fragments show strong survival rates, and the first signs of natural coral settlement have been observed on restored plots. For a reef that harbours over 500 fish species and supports both artisanal livelihoods and a vibrant tourism economy, the stakes could hardly be higher. The April–June 2026 campaign has placed Watamu’s reefs firmly on a path to recovery, demonstrating what is possible when science, management authority and community passion converge.
