In the sun-scorched plains of Layamorok, Baringo County, two wild ostriches moved through the bush, searching for food and keeping watch over their territory. They had harmed no one. They were neither a threat to livestock nor a danger to people. They were not being a nuisance to anyone. They were living the only life they knew; the only life they had ever known.
It is lamentable that someone chose to harm them.
When our Veterinary and Capture Team arrived, they found the birds with arrows buried deep in their bodies. The ostriches had been targeted for reasons that defy understanding. They had done nothing to deserve the pain inflicted upon them. Their only crime was existing in a world where they had become a target.
Our team, with their million-thoughts-zero-words mien, swung into action. They carefully restrained the birds, assessed the injuries, and extracted the wicked arrows with the precision and compassion that define their work. The birds were then stabilised to give them the best possible chance of survival. Those two were lucky to be found. The question now becomes, how many others may still be suffering silently, unseen?
Our wildlife should be assured of a life in which nobody is going to do anything to them because they are guaranteed complete safety in that environment. They should be able to roam freely, raise their young, and live out their natural lives without the threat of human cruelty. Alas, the reality is far from this ideal. Every day, animals are injured, maimed, or killed by people who see them as nothing more than targets or commodities.
These lovely creatures cannot do anything to resist, offer their opinion in any way, cry out for help, or even explain their pain. The onus is on the Kenya Wildlife Service to speak for them, because we owe them a duty of care. It is our responsibility to act on their behalf, and to ensure that those who harm them are brought to justice.
For those who work in conservation, each rescue offers a glimpse of what most people don’t see past the surface, and it is stunning. It is the beauty of a creature that refuses to give up, the resilience of a wild animal that fights to survive against impossible odds. It is the quiet satisfaction of knowing that, for these two big birds, the story ended not in tragedy but in hope.
Our team’s revolving door of saving lives never stops. One rescue follows another, and each one is a battle against the forces that threaten Kenya’s wildlife. To ameliorate the crushing disappointment of a life that wasn’t all the brochure had promised, the team focuses on what they can control: their skill, their compassion, and their refusal to give up.
The rescue of these two ostriches is a reminder that wildlife deserves to live free from cruelty. It is a reminder that every life matters, and that every intervention is a victory against the darkness. However, the work is far from over. There are still countless animals suffering silently, unseen, waiting for someone to notice.
Let us protect these ostriches, admire them from a distance, and allow them to remain wild and free. Your support helps make rescue interventions like these possible. Donate today and help us protect more wildlife, one life at a time.
