
Technology is playing an increasingly vital role in wildlife conservation, and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is at the forefront of this transformation, as demonstrated by our participation in the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation (STRI) for Society Week 2026, currently underway at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
The five-day exhibition, running from 18th to 22nd May 2026 under the theme “Igniting Innovation: Bridging Science and Society for Sustainable Development,” highlights the role of science and technology in addressing real-world challenges. The event has brought together thousands of stakeholders, including government leaders, global ambassadors, academia, the research community, industry giants, and members of the public, all united by a shared commitment to harnessing innovation for sustainable development.
Transforming Conservation Through Technology
At the exhibition, KWS is showcasing how technology is transforming wildlife conservation through innovations such as EarthRanger, LoRa technology, drone surveillance, and wildlife tracking collars that support real-time monitoring, strengthen wildlife protection, enhance research, and support human-wildlife coexistence.
These tools are revolutionising how KWS protects Kenya’s wildlife heritage. EarthRanger is a software platform that integrates data from various sources – including animal collars, camera traps, drone footage, and ranger patrols – to provide a comprehensive operational picture of protected areas. This real-time intelligence enables rapid response to threats and more strategic deployment of resources, significantly enhancing the effectiveness of conservation operations.
Long-range transmitters fitted to animals like rhinos and lions allow conservation teams to track movements in real time, preventing human-wildlife conflict and strengthening wildlife protection efforts. The technology identifies animals both in the field and in the office, with data combined with field records to provide comprehensive reports on wildlife, rangers’ activities, and asset deployment. This integrated approach ensures that conservation teams have the information they need to make informed decisions and respond swiftly to emerging threats.
Drones and Tracking Collars
Drone surveillance systems are enhancing efforts to deter poaching and bushmeat trade, reduce human-wildlife conflict, and monitor key species such as elephants. These aerial systems provide real-time surveillance capabilities and improve evidence collection for wildlife crime investigations and prosecutions. By providing a bird’s-eye view of protected areas, drones enable KWS to detect illegal activities quickly and deploy ground teams precisely where they are needed most.
Wildlife tracking collars, particularly lion collars, help conservation teams monitor movements in real time, providing early warnings that prevent conflict with communities and enabling rapid intervention when animals stray into settled areas. This technology is essential for fostering peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife, a key objective of the KWS Strategic Plan. By understanding animal movements and behaviour, KWS can implement proactive measures that protect both wildlife and livelihoods.
A National Platform for Innovation
STRI for Society Week 2026 was organised under the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation in collaboration with the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation, the National Research Fund, and the Kenya National Innovation Agency. The forum was crafted to socialise science, democratise innovation, and ensure that research outcomes directly benefit society, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and practical application.
As Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi emphasized during the event, Kenya must position itself as a continental hub for innovation, research collaboration, and emerging technologies. The government has committed to increasing research funding, recognising that science, technology, research, and innovation are necessities for economic transformation, resilience, and prosperity. This commitment provides a supportive policy environment for conservation technology initiatives.
KWS understands that adopting cutting-edge conservation technologies is essential for addressing emerging threats, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing the effectiveness of wildlife protection efforts. The Service continues to encourage stakeholders to support innovative conservation technologies that strengthen wildlife protection and safeguard Kenya’s natural heritage.
