
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has taken a significant leap forward in conservation technology with the deployment of drones for surveillance, wildlife monitoring, and operational efficiency across protected areas.
On 18th June, the KWS senior management team, led by Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga, witnessed a practical demonstration of drone applications in conservation at the KWS Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) in Manyani, a Centre of Excellence for wildlife conservation and law enforcement training.
The exercise, conducted by KWS Airwing drone pilots, showcased how drone technology is transforming wildlife protection in Kenya. The demonstration highlighted the system’s capabilities in strengthening surveillance, enhancing wildlife monitoring, and improving operational efficiency across the country’s national parks and reserves.
Transforming Wildlife Protection
The drone system is enhancing efforts to deter poaching and bushmeat trade, two of the most significant threats facing Kenya’s wildlife. By providing real-time aerial surveillance, drones enable KWS to detect and respond to illegal activities quickly, often before poachers can inflict harm. The technology also plays a crucial role in reducing human-wildlife conflict by monitoring wildlife movements and providing early warning to communities living near protected areas, allowing for timely interventions that prevent crop damage, livestock predation, and loss of life.
Drones are also proving invaluable for monitoring iconic species such as elephants, rhinos, and other wildlife.
