This week’s simultaneous count across seven of Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes — Magadi, Bogoria, Nakuru, Naivasha, Elementaita, Baringo, and Logipi — revealed more than numbers. It offered fresh insight into how changing lake conditions are reshaping the distribution of Lesser Flamingos.

Led by the Kenya Wildlife Service in collaboration with the National Museums of Kenya, Nature Kenya, and community partners, the exercise focused on the Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor), the world’s most numerous flamingo species, but one that is globally classified as Near Threatened.

A Stronghold in Decline

For decades, Lake Nakuru symbolized Kenya’s flamingo spectacle, with feeding flocks once exceeding one million birds. In January 2006, surveys recorded 1,347,063 individuals there. By January 2025, that number had fallen to about 500.

Bogoria and Elementaita tell a similar story. Since around 2010, rising water levels — linked to intensified seasonal rainfall — have altered lake chemistry across the Rift Valley. At Lake Nakuru, surface area has increased by an estimated 70% relative to its 1984–2009 average; Bogoria by 28%; and Baringo by 59%.

These changes matter because rising water dilutes the salinity and alkalinity needed to sustain Arthrospira fusiformis — the spirulina that forms the main food source for Lesser Flamingos. When spirulina declines, flamingos move.

The Surprise at Lake Logipi

While traditional strongholds have lost birds, Lake Logipi in the remote Suguta Valley of Turkana County has emerged as a possible refuge. In December 2024, an aerial survey counted an estimated 737,000 Lesser Flamingos there — one of the largest recent single-site counts in East Africa.

Even more significant is the evidence of active breeding. Surveys in March 2025 and 2026 found flocks made up of 20 to 40 percent juveniles, alongside old mud nests and hatched eggshells along the shoreline. Regular breeding sites for this species are extremely few worldwide, and in East Africa only Lake Natron in Tanzania has long been recognized as one.

Unlike Nakuru, Bogoria, and Elementaita, Lake Logipi’s water levels and chemistry appear to have remained relatively stable. Its hot, enclosed setting seems to maintain conditions suitable for spirulina growth throughout the year.

Why This Matters

Flamingo numbers can change dramatically within weeks. A March 2026 count at Logipi recorded about 50,000 birds, far below the December 2024 estimate. That volatility is normal for a species capable of moving hundreds of kilometres between lakes in very short periods.

That is why simultaneous counts matter. A single-site count can mislead, but coordinated surveys across the full lake network give a more accurate picture of where the population is at a given time and how that pattern is changing over time.

There is also a conservation gap. Nakuru, Bogoria, and Elementaita already benefit from formal protection as national parks or reserves, Ramsar wetlands, and UNESCO World Heritage sites. Lake Logipi has no equivalent designation, despite its growing apparent importance.

Kenya’s National Recovery and Conservation Action Plan for the Lesser Flamingo (2026–2035) is intended to help address this gap while supporting the country’s obligations under the Convention on Migratory Species, AEWA, and the Ramsar Convention.

A Shared Responsibility

For Turkana County, Lake Logipi presents both an opportunity and a responsibility: the chance to support community-based conservation and tourism around a site that may now host one of the region’s most important wildlife spectacles.

For researchers and conservation partners, it underscores the need for sustained monitoring of both Lake Logipi and Lake Natron to better understand flamingo movements and protect emerging breeding sites.

And for everyone who has watched the pink horizons of Nakuru or Bogoria, it is a reminder that protecting Kenya’s flamingos means protecting a shifting network of habitats, not a single fixed location.
