WORLD WILDLIFE DAY 2017 CELEBRATIONS

Kenya joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Wildlife Day (WWD) on March 3, 2017. This year’s celebrations will be held in Nakuru County at the Afraha stadium.

CASHLESS PAYMENT AT KWS PARKS AND RESERVES POINTS OF ACCESS

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has adopted use of technology to meet customer needs in accessing its parks and reserves countrywide. Consequently payment at points of park entry has now gone cashless effective January 27, 2017.

This is in line with KWS conservation mission that commits the organization to ensuring efficient payment processes geared towards better services to our customers and stakeholders.

ONE LION COLLARED IN NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) today fitted one of the more than 30 lions in Nairobi National Park (NNP) with a satellite radio collar to monitor its movement and location.

The early morning exercise was witnessed by KWS Director General Mr. Kitili Mbathi and International Fund for Animal welfare (IFAW) officials led by Mr. Steve Njumbi.

STATUS OF WILDLIFE CRIME AFTER JUST-ENDED FESTIVE SEASON

Kenya Wildlife Service rangers and other security agencies are on high alert across the country after an apparent increase in various organized criminal activities, especially wildlife crime, during the just-ended festive season. 

Efforts to track down poaching suspects are underway in several parts of the country.

Despite heightened wildlife security deployments, the following poaching incidents were registered during the just ended 2016 festive season.

KWS RECEIVES SECURITY EQUIPMENT FROM BRITISH PEACE SUPPORT TEAM

The British Peace Support Team, Eastern Africa (BPST(EA)), on behalf of the British Government, has today donated a 20-feet containerised armoury and a number of laptops to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for safe custody of arms and to help in the fight against poaching respectively.

DEATH OF ELEPHANT FROM ROAD ACCIDENT ON MOMBASA ROAD

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is saddened that in the early hours of this morning, an elephant died arising from a hit by a canter lorry at Kanga station area of the park along Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The report coming from the highway police was received by KWS at about 4.00 a.m. upon which a team was dispatched to the scene. The elephant, an adult female had unfortunately already died from impact of the accident.

TWO ELEPHANTS IN AMBOSELI ECOSYSTEM FITTED WITH TRACKING COLLARS

Two elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem have been fitted with tracking collars. The collars transmit a satellite and radio signal using global positioning system (GPS) technology to map out the elephants’ migratory routes and identify how expansively the elephants travel in search of water and vegetation.

The ongoing drought situation in the country has resulted in dispersal of wildlife from their traditional habitats in search of pasture and water.

This has increased the risk factor of conflict as the wildlife come into contact with the public and human activities resulting to an increase in human wildlife conflicts.

KENYA HOLDS NATIONAL STAKEHOLDER BRIEFING ON CITES COP17
