KWS RANGER SCOOPS AFRICAN AWARD

Kenya Wildlife Service ranger, Quresh Abdi Guyo has won the 2018 African Ranger Award, in recognition of exceptional passion, commitment and dedication 

Making the announcement, Alibaba Foundation said Guyo has demonstrated excellence as a wildlife ranger.

Guyo is an investigation assistant based in Isiolo in Kenya’s Eastern Conservation area.

NORTHERN WHITE RHINO COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS LAUNCHED

Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia County was the venue for the launch of commemorative Posta Kenya stamps. Three stamps were launched featuring images of Sudan - the last male northern white rhino which died earlier this year - as well as Najin and Fatu, both females.

Kenya continues to enjoy leadership in wildlife conservation as demonstrated by increased wildlife populations – elephants at over 34,000 individuals and rhinos at more than 1,000 individuals:  because of this, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the poaching of three (3) rhinos yester night, May 02, 2018 at the Rhino Sanctuary in Meru National Park, where we lost two black rhinos and a calf.

It has come to KWS’ attention that an image of a purported eruption of Mt. Kilimanjaro has been doing the rounds on Social Media since 1st April, 2018 which happens to be April Fool’s Day.

The image has caused some anxiety with some visitors calling Amboseli N. Park to confirm the story of an eruption.

ELEPHANTS MOVED FROM LAIKIPIA AND NYERI TO TSAVO

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is relocating 21 elephants from Solio and Sangare ranches in Laikipia and Nyeri Counties respectively to the Tsavo East National Park in the Coast region.

The two-week exercise was launched on February 21, 2018 by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala at Solio Ranch. It will cost Sh4.5 million.

WILDLIFE SECURITY BEEFED, USAID DONATES 26 VEHICLES TO KWS

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has benefitted from 26 four-wheel drive vehicles donated by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) which will be used by its security teams.

The funding is under a programme titled Kenya Wildlife Protection and Conservation Programme (KWPCP) worth 500-million shillings.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has released results of wildlife censuses for elephant, buffalo, giraffe and grevy’s zebra carried out in five vital ecosystems in 2016 and 2017. Cabinet secretary in the ministry, Prof. Judi Wakhungu presided over the release of the results at the Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters in Nairobi on December 22, 2017. One of the highlights of the results was the significant increase of elephants, which she termed commendable.
