Body of suspected poacher found with offending spear in Laikipia

KWS Spokesperson, Mr Paul Mbugua, displays firearms and rounds of ammunition recovered from suspected poachers at a past press conference. A suspected poacher, who escaped from a fierce shootout with KWS rangers in Laikipia Nature Conservancy was found dead a short distance away from the scene of the night shootout. A spear and an AK 47 rifle was also recovered.

A suspected poacher, who escaped from a fierce shootout with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers in Laikipia Nature Conservancy, succumbed to his injuries.

His body has been found this morning a short distance away from the scene of the night shootout. A spear suspected to have been used alongside an AK 47 rifle was also recovered.

He had fled the scene of shootout after his accomplice was felled by the rangers and the rifle recovered.  

The rangers had responded to gunshots within the ranch at night when they encountered the two suspected poachers.  

The two suspects had shot and injured an elephant that is being sought by KWS team. An aerial team with a light aircraft is helping with the search for the injured jumbo. 

At the same time, the three Maasai morans admitted at the Loitokitok Hospital in Kajiado County are still undergoing treatment following a human wildlife incident where a lion killed last night.

The morans had mobilised themselves to pursue a pride of lions that had killed a cow last evening at 7pm in the Elangata Ngima area of Kuku Group Ranch in Loitokitok.

They were seriously injured while pursuing the pride of lions.

Elsewhere, a lion which had strayed from the Laikipia Nature Conservancy and which has been roaming in Baringo County, is still being monitored by KWS team of rangers and capture personnel.

It is currently at Loruk area near Lake Baringo.

We call upon members of the public to desist from killing wild animals and instead, report to KWS as wild animals can be very dangerous.
