REGISTRATION OF ILLEGALLY POSSESSED AFRICAN GREY PARROTS (Psittacus erithacus)

Nairobi, April 28, 2022: The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife issued a 45 day amnesty through Gazette Notice No. 11522 for persons in possession of birds of the species African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) without a permit issued by KWS to visit any KWS office for declaration, registration and permitting of such persons to possess the birds. The 45 day amnesty ran from 25th October 2021 to 8th December 2021.

The public is hereby notified that:

  1. The process of registering African grey parrots that were declared to KWS within the amnesty period (25th October 2021 to 8th December 2021) is going on;

  2. All persons who declared African grey parrots in their possession within the amnesty’s timeline are requested to wait to be contacted by KWS for registration;

  3. KWS will advise each of the persons, the date, time and nearest registration centre (Station) designated by KWS to present the African grey parrots for registration; and,

  4. KWS will register the African grey parrots and issue the ‘owner’ a permit regularizing possession of the African grey parrot(s), upon payment of the requisite fees to KWS.
